COMIC BOOK YETI THIS WEEK: Feb 4-10
Podcast episodes, crowdfunding recommendations, articles, and games
It has been a week friends. My wife works remotely for the government so it’s been…trying to say the least. The recent news with Diamond does not bode well for indy comics publishers or the creators who work in the space but we are committed to continuing to support this community all we can. To that end, we’ve expanded this here little newsletter yet further, adding two new content sections: Indy Comics Pick Up Of The Week covered by yours truly and Roll Around And Find Out about gaming which our Gaming Editor, Dan Nixon, will be covering. The Yeti Sightings crowdfunding section has kindly been taken over by Ian Mondrick to help lighten the load on me a little bit. If you’d like to see something here, let us know and if you’d like to start a section yourself, reach out. I’m always open to new ideas and perspectives on how we can make this better.
ON THE PODCAST
Joe Caramagna interview - Space Chasers
It feels like this interview has been a long time coming. Anyone that has been following the Comic Book Yeti crew the past few years knows that Jimmy always tries to shine a light on letterers, so finally letterer and writer Joe Caramagna joins Jimmy to talk a little about his career in comics. Joe and Jimmy also talk about Joe teaming up with astronaut Leland Melvin to write Space Chasers, a middle-grade graphic novel about Tia Valor and a diverse ensemble of kids training to launch to an advanced space station. Listeners might remember Leland Melvin as the astronaut who included his dogs in his NASA photo. Joe talks about collaborating with Leland Melvin on the series (this is the first volume), what Joe learned while working on the series, the things that were important to Joe to include, why he would never want to travel to space, and how his daughter wants to be an astronaut. Plus since Jimmy knows Joe loves donuts he invites Joe to Delaware to treat him to Sleeping Bird Doughnuts.
Tom Sniegoski Interview - The Herculoids from Dynamite Comics
When Dynamite solicited the return of The Herculoids into the comics medium, I was immediately concerned. Oh no, who's writing it? It is such a beloved childhood property of mine. Who could do it justice? Then my fears were allayed when saw Tom Sniegoski was at the reins. Given his background working on other major properties like Hellboy and Vampirella with their own distinct and important legacies, I knew he'd be the perfect fit. I'd been meaning to catch up with Tom for quite some time now so this was the perfect opportunity to get him back on the show to dive into what turns out is a shared love of this weird old Hanna Barbera cartoon property. In the episode, Tom shares his childhood connection to it, the challenges of translating all these non-speaking creatures front and center in comic book form, and the collaboration process with artist Craig Rousseau to interpret the original designs of Alex Toth. We also carve out some time to hear about his other projects and how comics can engage new young readers, something I always seem to be bringing up lately.

When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #2 - Boom Studios
The mystery of Puerto Cristina deepens as the veteran exorcist and his apprentice are drawn to a remote farmhouse in the hopes of saving a young boy’s soul. What they find there, however, is an unimaginable nightmare, abominations of nature that the villagers believe is the work of a mythical creature…
The first issue of this gripping new exorcism drama went largely under the radar. I just didn’t see or hear much about it until I noticed on the shop shelves at Acme Comics. I’m a sucker for a good cover and as a fan of Hellblazer, pretty much couldn’t resist picking it up to give it a try. Simple concept, two priests battling demonic possession globally best described as the exorcist odd couple. Rebelka’s artwork is simply stunning, reminds me of Tyler Crook a bit but truly a unique visual voice. Give it a look.

“Off the Page Games is focused on creating unique games with amazing table presence that are based off of creator-owned comic books. We make games that pop off the page and land on your table as an innovative board game that’s dripping with theme.” This is taken directly from their home page and is a perfect publisher to highlight to our readers.
